The Best Golden Milk Latte Recipe

Golden milk, or Turmeric latte, is an old Indian Ayurvedic drink called Haldi doodh. Traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, turmeric milk is now frequently found on menus at local cafes alongside beetroot and matcha lattes.

Even though it is now a ‘popular’ hot drink, many are still unaware of its extensive health benefits or how to make it themselves.

Why Drink Turmeric Milk?

This golden milk is an excellent anti-inflammatory and immune booster due to the curcumin compound in turmeric. Generally speaking you can make golden milk however you want, with a few simple ingredients, but adding in items such as ginger and cinnamon assist in the effectiveness of the milk. These ingredients help with fighting off colds and sore throats, lowering blood sugar levels, and offer digestive aid.

Turmeric isn’t a quick-fix for all your problems, it requires consistency and it can take a few weeks before you start to notice significant changes. But just know that it does work and it has for centuries.

What You Need:

Two cups (500ml) milk, of your choice.

If you’re trying to keep inflammation low rather use a plant based milk such as coconut milk which also has anti-inflammatory properties.

1 tsp ground turmeric

2 slices of fresh ginger, or ½ tsp ground ginger

A pinch of ground black pepper

A pinch of  ground cinnamon

½ tsp ghee (optional)

A pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)

1 star anise (optional)

1 tsp honey

How To Make It:

  1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat.

  2. Whisk in the turmeric, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon (and the other optional ingredients if you decide to use them)  until well mixed.

  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes.

  4. Turn the heat off and strain into a mug. Add in the honey and enjoy!

Some FAQ’s About Golden Milk

Can you drink turmeric milk everyday?

Yes, you can and we recommend it. Try to keep it to once a day though because consuming too much curcumin can result in some unwanted side effects. Most people drink it just before sleeping.

Will the turmeric stain your teeth?

Yes it can, just as coffee and tea do. It might not be a pronounced yellowing, but it is possible that it will happen. The good thing is that turmeric is actually good for your teeth because of its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

What happens if you drink turmeric milk everyday?

There are a number of things you might experience after drinking the golden milk, but everyone’s body works differently so don’t be surprised if you don’t experience all the benefits of turmeric.

It is likely that you will experience a decrease in bloating and digestive discomfort. You might even notice that your skin is looking brighter because of the rich antioxidants in turmeric.

There will hopefully be a noticeable difference with inflammation, brain function and mood.
